Acer Inc., founded in 1976 by Stan Shih and his partners in Taiwan, began as Multitech International, focusing on distributing electronic parts and consulting on microprocessor technologies.

In 1981, the company was renamed Acer, derived from the Latin word for "acute" or "sharp," symbolizing precision and excellence.

Acer's early success was marked by the development of the MicroProfessor MPF-I, a teaching tool, and the production of PC clones for larger companies. By 1986, Acer introduced one of the world's first Chinese language computer systems.

The company went public in 1988, achieving significant growth and profitability.

In the 1990s, Acer expanded globally, acquiring companies like Packard Bell and Gateway, and diversifying into software, hardware, and publishing.

The company also faced challenges, including a shift from high-margin to low-margin products and internal management changes.

By the early 2000s, Acer transitioned from manufacturing to focusing on design, marketing, and distribution, while outsourcing production to contract manufacturers.

This strategy led to increased global sales and a stronger brand presence. Acer's product range expanded to include desktops, laptops, servers, storage devices, smartphones, tablets, and gaming PCs under the Predator brand.

To address these challenges, Altos was acquired by Acer in 1990 for $94 million, primarily to leverage its U.S. distribution channels. At the time of the acquisition, approximately 128,000 Altos systems were installed globally.

Post-acquisition, Altos continued to operate under the Acer brand, contributing to Acer's expansion in the computer hardware industry.
